New Media: Augmented Reality

Everyone has heard this saying but in today’s digital era, marketing experts are going to new measures to get their message out there. People have become too accustomed to media just being text and images.
The term ‘Augmented Reality’ is still emerging in the digital world and is slowly starting to make its way to Australian markets. But what is Augmented Reality [AR]?
Deemed as the possible 8th mass media, AR is “a live direct or indirect view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are augmented [or supplemented] by computer-generated sensory input such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data.”
Demonstrations of how AR is used can be seen throughout the new issue of RED Magazine including an article on Augmented Reality and how it is seen as the birth of the 8th mass media.

The university student that convinced her family and friends that she was on an overseas holidays through pictures she created from her apartment has used AR when putting together a book featuring her photos. AR allows readers to scan pages and see the before and after versions of each photo.
While some people may confuse AR with QR codes or consider them to be similar, QR codes only allow users to go directly to a link without any interaction whereas AR allows for that interaction and visual stimulation.
The possibilities on how AR can be used for marketing are endless; AR can be used to bring the world to life all around us.
