How to rank higher on Google
Frequently people ask us how to get their webpage to the front page of Google, they may have a brand new website and are keen to get it to the top of search, or they may have an existing website which isn’t performing as well as it could be. Improving your websites search ranking, will provide a large boost in traffic, as many people don’t go past the first few listed links when doing a web search. Getting your page to rank as high as it can, will pay in exposure and real dollars from direct sales.
Google uses a variety of complex algorithms to determine which websites it should rank higher; these algorithms are based on Google’s best practices and are closely guarded secrets so they can’t be gamed to artificially inflate page rankings. Google doesn’t like if you try to artificially boost your rankings, they can drop your ranking or even completely remove you from search results. However, although the algorithms are secretive there is a range of legitimate strategies that you can employ in order to get your site to climb the search engine rankings.
SEO, (Search engine optimisation)
Search engine optimisation is as it sounds, optimising your website for search engines. This can be done in multiple ways, the simplest way is to insert relevant keywords throughout your content to tell Google what your page is about and help people your content when they search. It’s important for the content to sound as natural as possible to avoid being flagged and penalised for “keyword stuffing”. Copy, Grammar and Navigation all play a large role in website optimisation, if users can’t easily navigate and read your webpage easily, how will Google?
Responsiveness is where your website is crafted to adapt to the device it is being viewed on. This is becoming increasingly important as mobile web traffic accounts for over half of the total traffic on the Internet and as such Google ranks responsive websites much higher than basic websites. The amount of mobile traffic you receive will be dependent on your industry. Currently Redhotblue receives around 30% of our total traffic from mobile devices and it is only growing. Below is an example of the Mackay City Centre website which we created to be responsive and adapt to any device it is viewed on.
Google latest algorithm trawls through websites and ranks website content for quality. Google hates websites with low-quality content, which will severely impact your search rankings. Google’s search guru John Mueller states, “In most cases, quality is better than quantity”. Aim to develop content which is unique to your company, and that’s good enough to make your customers want to engage with.
A focus on developing quality content is one of the easiest ways to boost your ranking. A website that is updated regularly with well-crafted content is going to rank much higher than a one which hasn’t been updated in awhile.
Link building plays a large role in determining where to place you in search rankings. The more websites that link back to your website, the higher it will rank. It’s not just about the number of links, but the quality of links as well. If a reputable website links to your blog it is going to be much more effective at boosting your rank than Joe Blogs sharing a post about you on his Facebook page.
At minimum you should be aiming to get your webpage listed on as many local directories as possible. This will both help people find you and provide links to your website which search engines will index. Make sure these links are updated, don’t have out-dated, and inaccurate information such as addresses or open hours.
Link building goes hand in hand with content strategy, as people will more likely link to quality content on your website. We highly recommend integrating Google Analytics, as it is a great way to see what parts of your website are performing better than others. Analytics will also allow you to see where your readers are coming from and what content they are engaging with. Understanding this can aid in developing new content that will be valuable to your clients.
