Bonnie’s French Escape

After being away for a little over 4 weeks, the past few days have been a blur getting back into the work groove and getting over jet lag. Our holiday seemed like the amazing race as we travelled to Hong Kong, Southern France and my hometown of Barrie Canada. We used every method of travel – planes, trams, boats, trains and a lot of foot power. Although we enjoyed each city we visited for different reasons, the highlight of our trip was soaking up the sun in Southern France.

We made an effort to “live like the locals” and booked an apartment in Nice for a week. It was so nice after weeks of travelling to have a lovely home base to relax in. It was a few minutes’ walk to the old town which was our favourite area. We did enjoy a few restaurants, but the best thing about having a full kitchen in the apartment was that we could visit the markets and cook with the wonderful local produce. The markets in France were amazing – you could really find everything you needed from local cheeses, baguettes and croissants, fruit and veg, preserves, olives, fresh flowers, famous Marseille soap and lavender products…

My hubby Jason wanted to try Socca [a chickpea flatbread pizza] and we found this in the market too – cooking over an open fire – it was delicious! We also tried to speak French as much as possible, and met a lovely lady selling wild mushrooms. She sold us Sanguin mushrooms – perfect to go with our steak that night. She told us how to cook them to bring out the flavour and they were amazing!

We both enjoyed the experience of the apartment rental, and would definitely try it again, hopefully sooner than later!!
