Top 3 hints and tricks for LinkedIn privacy

LinkedIn have done a few updates (again!), giving you more options and privacy settings with your profile. Below are our top 3 tips and tricks, a mixture of old and new – enjoy!

1.       Stealthy updating

While some updates to your profile, such as a promotion or moving to a new company, can be of interest to your LinkedIn connection base – you may not want to broadcast every update and change that you make. Metering this information is very easy:

  • Hover cursor over your profile pic in top right hand corner
  • Select Privacy & Settings Review
  • In Profile tab, under Privacy Controls – click Turn on/off your activity broadcasts
  • Uncheck the box and click Save Changes

2.       Tone down your email frequency

Email overload is a common symptom of signing up with LinkedIn, especially if you’ve been proactive and signed up to a few groups as well. There are a few different settings you will need to adjust to manage all of your LinkedIn emails:

  • Hover cursor over your profile pic in top right hand corner
  • Select Privacy & Settings Review
  • Click Communications tab
  • Under Emails and Notifications, click Set the frequency of emails and change settings to what suits you
  • If you are also a part of a group, stay in Privacy & Settings Review and click the Groups, Companies & Applications tab
  • Under Groups, click Set the frequency of group digest emails and change settings to what suits you

3.       Enjoy anonymity

We’re all human – checking out a competitor’s profile, rifling through someone’s connections, double checking on a potential employee – all of these and more are possible with LinkedIn. Only problem is, that profile user is automatically notified of your activity with a bright red notification flag next time they log in. Well, maybe not:

  • Hover cursor over your profile pic in top right hand corner
  • Select Privacy & Settings Review
  • In Profile tab, under Privacy Controls – click Select what others see when you’ve viewed their profile
  • Select your level of anonymity
