Behind the Scenes Special Edition – CORE Magazine Photoshoot
As part of the latest CORE Life Magazine ‘Women in Business’ Feature, the team at redhotblue took out a double page spread entitled ‘A Story Yet Untold’. The incredible and intricate team photo that redhotblue presented was a creative project months in the making. From the initial concepting and ideas, through to location sourcing, hunting for costumes and props, styling, hair and makeup, through to the actual day of shooting the photograph, the experience was certainly second to none! Once the raw photographs came in to the studio, it was then down to our amazing Creative Director, Scott, to work his magic in editing and adding all the objects in the scene. The result was an epic masterpiece with over 50 images and 600+ Photoshop layers, with the final piece taking countless hours to ensure the right tones –
and ultimately the right story, was told.
This is simply what we do best at redhotblue. We’re renowned for our comprehensive thought process in all that we embark on; it’s not just what we do for our own creative projects,
it’s what we do for every single client.
Brilliant solutions through Intelligent Creativity.
STAGE 1 – THE CONCEPT
First and foremost before embarking on any project at redhotblue, we needed to develop the concept. Something not only eye-catching and well executed, but that resonates with our brand and has true purpose. After much consideration, we decided on the theme of ‘Storytelling’ – something that we take very seriously as Mackay’s leading creative agency. We tell our client’s stories, simply put,
but how we do this is through intelligent creativity.
STAGE 2 – THE SOURCING
Once we had our concept, we needed to source a location for our photoshoot, and attain props and costumes to build our scene. Our inspiration in tones, styling and overall theme stemmed from history’s greatest tales – stories that have stood the test of time. What we did however, was put our own spin on how this tale was to be told, but ultimately left the story up to the viewers and readers.
After scouting many locations around the region, we settled on the Melaleuca Forest towards Slade Point. This was the perfect location for us to build a ‘forest’ scene, with trees, filtered light and the textured ground providing a great backdrop for us to work with. We found some incredible pieces and props (Shout-out to Gabby from Just Smitten for the loan of the vintage chair, and Sarah from Divalicious for the custom-made headwear worn by Jody). We also went through op-shops in Mackay looking for in-theme character outfits, with our own graphic designer Jake bringing some awesome props from home…
(An axe, a ukulele, a whip, a pipe, a swing and a cows skull to name a few!).
STAGE 3 – BEHIND THE SCENES
The day of our epic photoshoot arrived after weeks of planning, and we were straight into hair and makeup. The incredible Jenna from Lush Beautique made all the women in our scene look beautiful and in character, giving us bold eyes and lips to really stand out in our image. We arrived at location and set up props, including the vintage chair, the swing from a tree trunk, the cows skull and many more. Caroline Adele from Clique Photography was on hand to ensure all characters were positioned, and we patiently waited for the clouds to pass overhead to give us the perfect amount of filtered light – not an easy feat!
STAGE 4 – THE RAW PHOTO
STAGE 5 – POST PRODUCTION
To those who aren’t versed in the applications of PhotoShop and InDesign, it may be difficult to understand the process that happens in taking raw or original photographs to another level. This incredible job was up to our Creative Director, Scott, who spent hours upon hours in editing and building our scene. To put it into perspective, he added over 50 individual images and reached over 662 layers in crafting this intricate story. From adding spiders and webs, lamps on trees, a moon, a dream catcher, a chest of drawers, a dragon, vines, an owl, and many more items in this scene, there truly is no other story quite like it.
STAGE 6 – THE FINAL REVEAL
Who are the heroes, who are the villains? There’s mystery, magic and myth, and what is the significance of the items in the scene? You decide… but remember, there’s always true purpose in all that we do.
